Friedrich Nietzsche

The Gay Science

Die fröhliche Wissenschaft · 1882

Written after years of illness, in what Nietzsche called a time of convalescence, The Gay Science is his most joyful book and one of his most consequential. In short sections and occasional verse it takes up art, science, love and morality, and announces the death of God, the eternal recurrence and the love of one’s fate.

Its title comes from the Provençal gai saber, the art of the troubadours: knowledge practised with lightness, as a form of song. A fifth book was added in 1887.
