Fyodor Dostoevsky

White Nights

Белые ночи · 1848

A young man who has lived his whole life in reverie walks the summer streets of St Petersburg, in the season when night never quite falls. On the embankment he meets Nastenka, who is waiting for someone else. Over four nights they talk, confide and almost fall in love. Dostoevsky’s early novella is tender, comic and quietly devastating.

Written in 1848, a year before his arrest and mock execution, White Nights belongs to the young Dostoevsky, still close to Gogol and to the romantic tradition, yet already drawn to the solitude that would haunt the great novels.
