Homer

The Odyssey

Ὀδύσσεια · c. 725 BC

After Troy, Odysseus spends ten years trying to return to Ithaca, where his wife is besieged by suitors and his son has grown up without him. The Odyssey is the first great story of return, and already a story about storytelling: its hero lies, disguises himself, recounts his own adventures, and survives by his wits more than by his strength.

Where the Iliad is a poem of fate, the Odyssey is a poem of resource. Its episodes, the Cyclops, Circe, the Sirens, the descent among the dead, have passed into every European language.
