Marcus Aurelius

Meditations

Τὰ εἰς ἑαυτόν · c. AD 170–180

Written in Greek, during military campaigns on the Danube, by the most powerful man in the world. The Meditations were not meant for publication. They are exercises: reminders to act justly, to accept what cannot be changed, to remember that everything passes. Few books are so private, and few have been so widely shared.

Marcus Aurelius was not a philosopher by profession but a Stoic in practice, and the book has the force of a discipline rather than a system. It can be opened anywhere.
