Sense and Sensibility
1811
When their father dies, Elinor and Marianne Dashwood lose their home and most of their fortune, and move with their mother to a cottage in Devonshire. Elinor hides her feelings for a reserved young man who seems promised to another; Marianne gives herself entirely to the dashing Willoughby. Austen’s first published novel weighs prudence against passion with wit and compassion, and never quite lets either sister be right.
